China - Qualifying

To the surprise of few, the first sprint of the season ended with yet another Mercedes victory. As the fans waited for the qualifying for Sunday's main event to start, one question flashed through all their minds: would the penultimate session of the weekend bring more of the same?

Valtteri Bottas was the first driver on track, quickly followed by everyone save for the two Mercedes, who decided to wait out the early runs in the pits. Without their presence, Oscar Piastri set the quickest first time, but was beaten out from the top as soon as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli added their efforts to the timing sheet. For once, they did not end the session unbeaten. On his last attempt, Charles Lecerc was lightning fast on the track and therefore took Q1's first position. The other side of the standings, the elimination zone, included Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll, and Sergio Perez.

Hoping to save two sets of new tires for the last qualifying session, many drivers began Q2 on used softs. Once again, the two Mercedes set the quickest first time, but were beaten by Leclerc with a few minutes left to go. Antonelli found an answer to the Monegasque, but Russell reported issues with the car and boxed without finding a way to jump to the top of the standings. For those on the brink of making it into Q3, the session only got tenser as the clock ticked down the last minutes. Some of the men trying to improve their laps saw their dreams burn in front of their very eyes due to the yellow flag that waved over the circuit, after Gabriel Bortoleto went out on the last corner of his last attempt. Without the lap time, he did not make it out of the elimination zone, in which he was joined by Nico Hulkenberg, Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad.

The last session of the day started with a great surprise, as Russell suddenly stopped on track and reported that he was unable to shift gears. Although he was able to move without any help, he spent most of Q3 in the garage, unsure of whether he would be able to put a time on the board. In the meantime, his teammate jumped at the opportunity to get the provisional pole. He was the quickest of the bunch after the series of first runs and only lowered his benchmark on his second attempt. With that, he was on track to break the record for the youngest polesitter in history. The question remained: would anyone be able to take it away from him? Many tried, including his teammate, who had gone out just in time to complete one flying lap, but no one could. Antonelli took his first-ever career pole, bringing even more joy to the already cheery Mercedes garage.
